What Size Self Storage Unit Do I Need for Household Items? Choosing the wrong size storage unit is one of the most common – and most easily avoided – mistakes people make when booking self storage. Too small, and you’re faced with a van full of overflow on moving day with nowhere to put it. Too large, and you’re paying for weeks or months of empty space that’s doing nobody any good. Getting the size right from the start saves both money and stress, and it’s simpler than most people expect once you know what to look for.

What Size Self Storage Unit Do I Need for Household Items?
At NE Self Storage, we offer three container sizes – 10ft, 20ft, and 40ft – each suited to a different volume of household belongings. This guide walks you through what each one realistically holds, how to estimate what you need, and the practical factors that affect how efficiently you can use the space.
The Key Variables Before You Choose a Size
Before looking at specific sizes, it’s worth thinking through a few factors that genuinely affect how much space you’ll need:
- Are You Storing Everything, or Just Some Items?
Some people need to store the entire contents of a property – every piece of furniture, every box, every appliance. Others are storing selectively: the furniture from one room while they renovate it, or the boxes they haven’t unpacked since a previous move, or the bulky seasonal items that have been taking over the garage. The difference in volume can be significant, so be honest about what’s actually going in rather than estimating based on your whole home. - Will Furniture Be Disassembled?
This one makes a dramatic difference to the space required. A king-size bed frame, assembled, takes up a large footprint and considerable height. Disassembled and laid flat, the same bed frame takes up a fraction of the space. The same is true for wardrobes, dining tables, bookshelves, and most flat-pack or bolt-together furniture. If you’re willing to take large items apart before storage, you can often fit the same volume of belongings into a smaller unit than you’d otherwise need. - How Efficiently Will You Pack?
A unit packed methodically – heavy items on the floor, boxes stacked to the ceiling, furniture slotted together intelligently – holds considerably more than the same unit filled haphazardly. If you’re working quickly on moving day without a plan, you may find you need more space than a careful, considered pack would require. Our packing guide offers practical advice on making the most of whatever size you choose. - Do You Need to Access Things During Storage?
If you’ll need to retrieve specific items while everything else stays in storage, you’ll need to leave an access aisle rather than filling the container wall to wall. This effectively reduces the usable volume, and is worth factoring in when choosing a size. If you’re confident you won’t need access until the end of your rental, you can pack more tightly and use the space more efficiently.

10ft Container: What It Holds
Our 10ft container offers approximately 80 square feet of floor space, with an internal length of around 2.9 metres, a width of 2.3 metres, and a usable height of around 2.4 metres. In practical household storage terms, a 10ft container suits:
- The contents of a studio or one-bedroom flat, packed efficiently with furniture disassembled where possible
- The contents of two or three rooms from a larger property – for example, clearing a bedroom and a living room during a partial renovation
- A significant volume of boxes and smaller items without large furniture pieces
- Seasonal and overflow items from a family home – garden furniture, sports equipment, loft contents, Christmas decorations, and similar
The 10ft is our most affordable container at £20 per week, and it’s a good fit for anyone who doesn’t need to store full-sized sofas, large wardrobes, or king-sized beds alongside a significant volume of boxes. If your storage need is primarily boxes and medium-sized items, a 10ft will often be more than adequate.
20ft Container: What It Holds
Our 20ft container offers approximately 160 square feet of floor space – exactly double the 10ft – with an internal length of around 5.9 metres. This is our most popular size for household storage, and for good reason: it sits in a practical sweet spot that accommodates most typical home moves without unnecessary excess space.
A 20ft container comfortably holds:
- The full contents of a two-bedroom flat or a compact two-bedroom house, including sofas, beds, wardrobes, and kitchen appliances alongside a reasonable number of boxes
- The contents of a two- to three-bedroom house if furniture is disassembled and packing is reasonably efficient
- The furniture and belongings from a three- or four-bedroom house if you’re storing selectively rather than the entire property contents
- A full household move combined with the contents of a garage, garden store, or loft
From £30 per week, the 20ft offers a meaningful step up in capacity for a modest increase in cost. If you’re uncertain whether a 10ft will be enough, the 20ft is almost always the safer choice – the additional £10 per week is considerably less painful than discovering on moving day that you’ve run out of space.
40ft Container: What It Holds
Our 40ft container offers approximately 320 square feet of floor space – the equivalent of a large single-storey room – with an internal length of around 12 metres. This is the right choice for larger storage requirements, and gives you genuine room to organise belongings, maintain a clear access aisle, and store without compromise.
A 40ft container is suited to:
- The full contents of a large three- or four-bedroom family home, including all furniture, appliances, and a significant number of boxes
- A complete household move combined with garden furniture, shed contents, a garage clearout, and loft items
- Two households’ worth of belongings – useful for couples moving in together and temporarily storing duplicate furniture, or families combining belongings during a transition
- Long-term storage where you want space to organise items properly and retrieve things easily without unpacking everything
- Household storage combined with a business or trade use
From £60 per week, the 40ft is proportionally excellent value for the space it provides, and the practical comfort of having room to move around inside the container makes longer-term storage considerably more manageable.
A Simple Rule of Thumb
If you’re still uncertain after working through the above, a simple rule of thumb: count the number of bedrooms in the property you’re storing from, and match to the container as follows:
- Studio or 1-bedroom flat – 10ft container, packed efficiently
- 2-bedroom flat or small 2-bedroom house – 20ft container
- 2 to 3-bedroom house – 20ft container with efficient packing, or 40ft for comfort
- 3 to 4-bedroom house – 40ft container
- 4+ bedrooms or combined household and additional contents – 40ft container, or two units
This is a rough guide rather than a guarantee – the variables above (disassembly, packing efficiency, selective vs. complete storage) can shift the answer in either direction. When in doubt, size up: the cost difference is smaller than most people expect, and a little breathing room makes the whole process considerably less stressful.
