What items should not go in storage? Self storage is one of the most flexible solutions available when you need extra space – whether you are moving house, decluttering, renovating, or running a business that has outgrown its premises. The vast majority of everyday items are perfectly fine to store, and a good facility will accommodate almost anything you might reasonably need to keep safe. But there are some categories of item that should never go into a storage unit, for reasons of safety, legality, hygiene, or the protection of other customers’ belongings.

What items should not go in storage?
Knowing what those items are before you start packing saves you from problems down the line – and in some cases, from serious legal consequences. Here is a straightforward guide to the items that reputable UK storage providers, including NE Self Storage in Cramlington, will not permit in their units.
- 5ft Self Storage Container – £15 per Week
- 10ft Self Storage Container – £20 per Week
- 20ft Self Storage Container – £30 per Week
- 40ft Self Storage Container – £60 per Week

Flammable and Hazardous Materials
This is the most important category, and the most non-negotiable. Flammable liquids and gases pose an extreme fire risk in a storage environment, where there may be no automatic suppression systems and where fire can spread rapidly between units. Items prohibited under this heading include petrol, diesel, paraffin, paint thinner, turpentine, lighter fluid, gas canisters, aerosol cans, and fireworks.
The same applies to other hazardous chemicals – bleach, acids, fertilisers, pesticides, and similar substances. These can leak, react with other materials, or create toxic conditions. If you are unsure whether a substance is considered hazardous for storage purposes, the answer is almost always to leave it out. Most household chemicals that carry warning symbols on their labels should be kept at home, disposed of properly, or returned to a hazardous waste facility.
Perishable Food and Drink
Perishable food items – fresh produce, dairy products, meat, anything that can go off – must never go into storage. Even sealed or tinned items can attract pests if left over long periods, and anything that spoils will create odour, mould, and hygiene problems that spread far beyond your individual unit.
The same applies to plants, which need water, light, and airflow that a storage container simply cannot provide. Leaving plant material to decay in storage is both unpleasant and a potential pest risk to the entire facility.
If you are storing kitchen items, make sure everything is clean, dry, and free of food residue before packing. A crumb-filled toaster or an unwashed oven dish is unlikely to cause serious problems over a short storage period, but cleanliness is always the right starting point.
Illegal Items and Stolen Goods
It goes without saying that self storage cannot be used to store anything illegal. Controlled drugs, drug paraphernalia, counterfeit goods, unlicensed firearms, stolen property, and anything else that would be illegal to possess in the UK are strictly prohibited. UK storage providers reserve the right to inspect units where they have reasonable grounds for suspicion, and any discovery of illegal items will result in immediate police involvement and termination of the rental agreement.
The legal liability for storing prohibited items rests with the customer, not the facility. Do not put yourself at risk.
Weapons, Ammunition, and Explosives
Licensed firearms may be stored in very specific circumstances, but this is a specialist area that requires explicit discussion with the storage provider before any item is brought onto site. As a general rule, weapons – licensed or otherwise – should not be placed in a standard self storage unit.
Ammunition and explosives are prohibited outright, without exception, at any reputable UK facility. The risk to the site, to other customers’ belongings, and to the surrounding area is simply too great.
Living Things – People and Animals
This may seem obvious, but it is worth stating clearly: neither people nor animals may live in, or be left in, a storage unit. In the UK, using a storage unit as a dwelling is illegal. Storage units are not habitable spaces – they lack ventilation, plumbing, heating, and natural light – and attempting to use one as accommodation would breach your rental agreement immediately and could result in prosecution.
Animals must never be left in a storage container under any circumstances. This would constitute a serious animal welfare offence under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, and would be treated accordingly.
Valuables That Are Better Off Elsewhere
While not strictly prohibited, there are certain categories of high-value item that storage providers will generally recommend you think carefully about before placing in a unit. Cash, jewellery, passports, and irreplaceable documents such as original wills, deeds, or birth certificates are better kept in a secure home safe or bank safety deposit box. Storage facilities offer excellent security, but no physical site is entirely without risk, and these items are not easily replaced.
If you do choose to store valuables, always make sure your insurance cover is adequate for the full replacement value of what is in the unit.
Items That Require Special Consideration
Some items are not prohibited outright but need a little extra thought before going into storage. Batteries – particularly large lithium-ion batteries such as those in electric vehicles or power tools – can be a fire risk if damaged or stored improperly, and some facilities restrict them. Tyres and vehicles may be permitted but will typically require explicit approval. Items with strong odours may be allowed but should be packaged securely to avoid causing problems for neighbouring units.
If you have something that does not fit neatly into any of the categories above and you are unsure whether it is suitable for storage, the right move is always to ask before bringing it to site.
