What items are prohibited from storage facilities in the UK? Self storage is one of the most flexible and versatile solutions available for managing space – but it is not a solution for storing absolutely everything. Every self storage facility in the UK operates under a set of prohibited items restrictions, and understanding what cannot be stored is just as important as knowing what can.
“Not everything can go into a self storage unit in the UK. This guide outlines the items that are prohibited from UK storage facilities — including hazardous materials, perishables, and living things — and explains what you can and cannot store at NE Self Storage in Cramlington.”

What Items Are Prohibited From Storage Facilities in the UK?
The restrictions exist for good reasons – the safety of other customers’ belongings, the integrity of the facility, the safety of staff, and compliance with UK law. At NE Self Storage in Cramlington, we apply the same sensible, clearly explained prohibitions that responsible storage operators across the UK follow. This guide covers them comprehensively, answers the most common questions we receive from customers, and gives you a clear picture of exactly what is and is not welcome in our containers.
Questions? We’re here to Help!
Flammable and Explosive Materials
This is the category that carries the greatest risk and the clearest prohibition. Flammable and explosive materials of any kind are not permitted in self storage units in the UK – and the list is broader than many customers initially assume.
Petrol and diesel are the most commonly questioned items. Whether it is a spare container for a lawnmower, the remaining fuel in a stored vehicle’s tank, or any other quantity of liquid fuel – petrol and diesel are prohibited without exception. The fire risk in an enclosed steel container is significant, and the liability implications are serious.
Gas canisters and cylinders – including camping gas canisters, BBQ gas cylinders, and any other pressurised gas container – are prohibited. Even canisters that appear empty may retain residual gas that poses a risk in an enclosed space.
Fireworks and pyrotechnics of any kind are prohibited – this applies to unused fireworks, partial boxes, and any other pyrotechnic material regardless of quantity.
Aerosol cans in large quantities may be restricted depending on their contents – standard household aerosols in modest quantities are generally acceptable, but bulk quantities of flammable aerosol products are not.
Paint and solvents in significant quantities, particularly oil-based paints and chemical solvents, are prohibited due to both their flammability and their potential to cause damage to other stored items if a container is compromised.
The practical implication for most customers is straightforward – drain all fuel from any petrol-powered equipment before storage, do not include gas canisters in a container, and contact the facility if you are unsure about any specific item.
Perishable Food and Organic Material
Perishable food items are prohibited from self storage units across the UK – and the reasoning is practical rather than regulatory. Food that rots attracts pests. Pests damage other customers’ belongings. And the presence of pests in a storage facility creates a problem that is expensive, time-consuming, and deeply unwelcome for everyone involved.
The prohibition covers anything that will decay during the storage period – fresh food, opened food, food with a limited shelf life, and anything that will produce an odour as it deteriorates. Sealed, non-perishable tinned goods and genuinely long-life dry goods are generally less problematic, but even these are not recommended for longer term storage and should be discussed with the facility before storing.
Plants – including potted plants, cut flowers, and any other living vegetation – are prohibited for the same reason. They decay, they attract insects, and a sealed steel container is not a suitable environment for any living thing.
Living Animals
No living animal – of any species, any size, or any type – may be stored in a self storage unit. This is both a legal requirement and a basic welfare consideration. A self storage container is not a suitable environment for any living creature, and the storage of animals in any confined, unventilated space without regular food, water, and care constitutes an animal welfare offence under UK law.
This prohibition extends to everything from household pets to livestock, reptiles, insects, and any other living creature. It is raised here not because it is a common problem, but because it is occasionally enquired about – and the answer is an unambiguous no.
Illegal Items and Stolen Goods
This should be self-evident, but it is worth stating clearly. Items that are illegal to possess or handle in the UK – including illegal drugs, counterfeit goods, stolen property, and any other item whose possession constitutes a criminal offence – are strictly prohibited from storage.
Self storage operators in the UK have both a legal obligation and a moral responsibility to ensure their facilities are not used to conceal, store, or facilitate criminal activity. NE Self Storage cooperates fully with law enforcement agencies and will report any suspicion of criminal use of its facilities without hesitation.
Weapons, Ammunition, and Explosives
Firearms, ammunition, and explosive devices are prohibited from self storage facilities in the UK. This applies regardless of whether the items are legally held – a licensed firearm owner, for example, is required to store weapons in an approved gun safe at their registered address, not in a self storage container.
Decommissioned and replica weapons may be stored in some circumstances, but should always be discussed with the facility in advance to ensure compliance with current legislation and facility policy.
Hazardous Chemicals and Toxic Materials
Chemicals that are toxic, corrosive, or environmentally hazardous are prohibited. This includes agricultural chemicals, industrial cleaning products, certain pesticides and herbicides, and any other substance that could cause harm to people, other stored items, or the facility if it were to leak or spill.
The practical test for most customers is simple – if the item has a hazard warning symbol on its label, it warrants a conversation with the facility before storage. Many common household chemicals are perfectly acceptable in small, sealed quantities. Industrial quantities, leaking or damaged containers, and products with significant hazard classifications are not.
Highly Valuable and Uninsured Items
Most UK storage facilities strongly advise against storing items of very high monetary value – large quantities of cash, uninsured jewellery, unregistered collectibles, and similar items. This is not a legal prohibition but a practical one – self storage insurance policies have limits, and items of exceptional value are better protected in dedicated secure storage or safety deposit facilities with appropriate insurance coverage.
If you are considering storing items of significant value at NE Self Storage, we recommend discussing your specific situation with us and ensuring that your insurance arrangements adequately cover the items in question.
What You Can Store – The Vast Majority of Everything
It is worth finishing on a reassuring note. The prohibited items listed above represent a small minority of what people typically want to store – and the vast majority of household, personal, and business items are perfectly acceptable in our containers.
Furniture of all kinds. White goods and appliances. Clothing and personal items. Books, documents, and paperwork. Electronics and technology. Garden furniture and outdoor equipment. Business stock, tools, and equipment. Vehicles that are properly drained of fuel. The full contents of a family home. All of these and more are stored at NE Self Storage every day, safely and securely, for customers across the North East.
If you have a specific question about whether a particular item is acceptable for storage, the simplest and most reliable approach is to give Laurence a call. We would rather answer a question before you arrive than create a problem on the day.
