Here at NE Self Storage, we’ve seen most of these mistakes play out over the years, usually because someone was in a hurry or simply didn’t know better. So we’ve put together this guide to help you avoid the most common pitfalls and get the most out of your storage experience from day one.

    1. Choosing the Wrong Size Unit

This is, by a wide margin, the most common mistake people make. It happens in both directions: some people drastically underestimate how much space their belongings will take up and end up needing a second unit, while others overestimate and pay every week for space they never use.

The safest approach is to take a proper inventory of what you’re storing before you book anything. Walk through each room, make a rough list, and think about large furniture items separately from boxes. Most storage providers, including NE Self Storage, are happy to talk through your specific situation and recommend a size based on what you’re actually storing — so don’t be afraid to ask before you commit.

    2. Not Disassembling Furniture

Bed frames, wardrobes, bookshelves, and tables all take up far more room assembled than in pieces. A surprising number of people turn up to load a unit with furniture fully built, only to find it simply won’t fit through the door or leaves no room for anything else.

Wherever it’s safe and practical to do so, take furniture apart before it goes into storage. Keep screws, bolts, and fittings in a labelled bag taped to the relevant piece, so reassembly is straightforward when the time comes.

    3. Packing Without a Plan

Loading a storage unit haphazardly — heaviest items in last, fragile items squashed under boxes, no logical order — is one of the easiest ways to create problems for yourself later. It makes retrieving anything specific a nightmare, and increases the risk of damage to your own belongings.

A little planning goes a long way. Put heavy, sturdy items at the bottom and towards the back, lighter and more fragile items towards the top and front, and leave a narrow aisle if you think you’ll need to access things regularly. Label boxes clearly on more than one side, so you can identify contents even once everything is stacked.

    4. Forgetting About Moisture and Condensation

Even in a perfectly good storage unit, moisture can be a problem if items aren’t prepared properly. Placing furniture directly on the floor, packing boxes too tightly with no airflow, or sealing items in plastic rather than breathable materials can all encourage condensation and, eventually, mould.

Raise furniture off the floor using pallets or boards, use breathable covers like cotton dust sheets rather than plastic, and leave a small gap between items and the walls of the unit. A few silica gel desiccant packets dotted around the space can also help keep humidity in check.

    5. Storing Prohibited or Unsuitable Items
Flammable substances, perishable food, hazardous chemicals, and illegal items have no place in a storage unit — and reputable providers will explicitly prohibit them. Yet people still occasionally try to store things like petrol cans, gas canisters, or leftover paint, often without realising the risk this poses to themselves, their belongings, and everyone else on site.

If you’re ever unsure whether something is suitable for storage, ask your provider before bringing it to the facility. A good storage company would always rather answer a quick question than deal with a preventable problem later.

    6. Overlooking Insurance

It’s easy to assume that because a facility has good security, your belongings are automatically covered if something does go wrong. This isn’t necessarily the case. Some facilities include basic cover, others require you to arrange your own, and the level of cover can vary significantly.

Before committing to a unit, check exactly what is and isn’t covered, and make sure your belongings are insured for their full replacement value — particularly if you’re storing anything of significant sentimental or financial worth.

    7. Not Checking Access Arrangements

Access policies vary a great deal between storage providers. Some offer access only during restricted office hours; others provide round-the-clock entry via a personal gate fob or code. If you think you’ll need to get to your belongings outside of standard hours — early mornings, evenings, or weekends — it’s worth checking this before you book, rather than discovering the limitation when you turn up and find the gate locked.

At NE Self Storage, customers are given their own gate fob, giving flexible access to their container whenever they need it.

    8. Underestimating How Long Storage Will Be Needed

People often book storage for what they assume will be a short period — a few weeks during a move, for instance — only to find their circumstances change and they need the unit for considerably longer. This isn’t a problem in itself, but it can catch people out if they’ve signed up to a contract with penalties for early termination, or if they assumed a short-term promotional rate would apply indefinitely.

Where possible, look for flexible rental terms that let you extend or end your storage period without unnecessary penalty, so your storage arrangement can adapt as your situation does.

    9. Not Labelling or Recording What’s Stored

It sounds like a small thing, but failing to keep any record of what’s actually in your unit can cause real headaches months down the line — particularly if you’re storing for an extended period. Take photos as you pack, keep a simple inventory list, and label boxes clearly. This makes it far easier to find specific items later, and is also useful for insurance purposes if you ever need to make a claim.

    10. Choosing a Facility on Price Alone

It’s natural to want a good deal, but choosing a storage provider purely on the lowest headline price can backfire. A cheap facility with poor security, limited access, or hidden fees can end up costing more — in money, stress, or both — than a slightly higher-priced provider that gets the fundamentals right.

When comparing storage options, look at the whole picture: security standards, access arrangements, contract flexibility, and any additional charges, not just the weekly rate on its own.

Getting It Right From the Start

The good news is that every mistake on this list is entirely avoidable with a small amount of planning. Take an honest inventory before you book, ask questions if you’re unsure about anything, pack thoughtfully, and choose a provider that’s upfront about security, access, and pricing.

At NE Self Storage, our team is always happy to talk through your specific situation — whether that’s helping you choose the right container size, explaining our security setup, or simply answering questions before you commit. We believe a little good advice at the start saves a lot of hassle later.
