Can I drive my van right up to the unit?

NE Self Storage is a drive-up container storage facility. That means exactly what it sounds like. You drive through the gate, pull up directly alongside your container, open the doors, and load or unload straight from your vehicle. No lifts. No corridors. No staircases. No awkward corners to negotiate with a sofa, a washing machine, or a stack of boxes that seemed manageable until you had to carry them a hundred metres through a multi-storey building.

For many of our customers, this single practical feature is the deciding factor in choosing NE Self Storage over alternative options in the North East. And once you have experienced the simplicity of drive-up access — particularly during a house move or at the end of a long day of loading and unloading — it is very difficult to imagine choosing any other way of doing it.

    How Drive-Up Access Actually Works

The process of accessing your container at NE Self Storage is as simple as we can make it.

When you first take out a rental with us, you receive two things — a key for your individual container and a personalised gate fob that gives you access to the site. The gate fob is yours alone. It is not a shared code, not a buzzer that relies on someone being available to let you in, and not a combination that changes without warning. It is your personal access credential, and it works every time you visit, seven days a week between 7am and 7pm.

On arrival at the North Nelson Industrial Estate, you present your fob at the gate and drive straight in. The site layout is clear, well-organised, and easy to navigate — containers are arranged in rows with sufficient space on either side to manoeuvre a large vehicle comfortably. You pull up directly alongside your container, unlock it with your key, and you are ready to load or unload.

When you are done, you lock the container, return to your vehicle, and drive out. The whole process — from arriving at the gate to driving away — is entirely self-contained and entirely within your control. You do not need to speak to anyone, wait for anyone, or work around anyone else’s schedule.

What Vehicles Can Access the Site?

The NE Self Storage site at the North Nelson Industrial Estate has been designed with practical loading and unloading in mind — which means ample space for vehicles of all sizes.

Standard cars and estate cars access the site routinely — typically when customers are making a single trip to collect or add a smaller number of items. Hatchbacks, SUVs, and people carriers are all accommodated without difficulty.

Transit vans and panel vans of all standard sizes — the workhorses of most house moves and business storage operations — access and manoeuvre on the site straightforwardly. There is sufficient space alongside each container to allow a full-length panel van to pull up directly, with room to open the rear doors fully and transfer items without difficulty.

Luton vans — the longer, higher-bodied box vans most commonly used for house moves — are equally well accommodated. The site has been used regularly by removal companies and individual customers operating Luton vans throughout our trading history, and the layout handles them comfortably.

For larger requirements — customers moving the contents of a substantial property, or businesses delivering significant volumes of stock or equipment — small flatbed lorries and curtain-sider vehicles can also be accommodated. If you are planning to visit with a particularly large vehicle and would like to confirm in advance that access will be straightforward, simply give Laurence a call and we will be happy to discuss the specifics.

Why Drive-Up Access Makes Such a Difference

It is worth dwelling on this point, because the practical difference between drive-up container storage and indoor multi-storey self storage is considerably greater than it might appear on paper.

In a multi-storey facility, every item you store makes at least two journeys it does not make with drive-up storage — from the vehicle to the lift, and from the lift to the unit. For a single box of documents, this is a minor inconvenience. For the full contents of a three bedroom house, including sofas, beds, wardrobes, white goods, and dozens of boxes, it is a significantly greater undertaking. The cumulative effort of multiple trips through corridors and lifts, particularly when a move or renovation is already physically and emotionally demanding, is not something to underestimate.

Drive-up access eliminates all of this. The vehicle is the transition point — everything moves directly between the van and the container, in the most efficient and physically straightforward way possible. Customers who have previously used indoor facilities consistently tell us that the difference is more significant than they anticipated.

This matters particularly for the specific items that are most challenging to handle in corridor-and-lift environments. Large sofas that cannot be easily tilted or disassembled. American-style fridge freezers that need to remain upright. Mattresses that are awkward in any confined space. Bicycles. Garden furniture. Workshop equipment. All of these move easily and naturally in a drive-up environment — and become disproportionately challenging in a building with lifts and narrow corridors.

Practical Tips for Your First Visit

If you are coming to NE Self Storage for the first time, a few practical notes will help your visit go as smoothly as possible.

Bring your gate fob and your container key on every visit — the fob operates the site gate and the key operates your individual container. If you are visiting with a larger vehicle for the first time, arriving a few minutes before you plan to start loading gives you time to familiarise yourself with the site layout and position your vehicle optimally before you begin.

For heavy or bulky items, a sack truck or furniture trolley is worth bringing if you have one — even with drive-up access, having a wheeled option for the heaviest items makes the process quicker and easier. Furniture sliders are useful for positioning large items within the container once they are inside.

Label your boxes clearly before they go into storage — even if the container is going to be closed for only a few weeks, knowing what is where will save you significant time when you come to retrieve things.

And if you have any questions at all about access, vehicle sizes, or anything else about your visit, give Laurence a call before you arrive. We are always happy to help.
