A Town Built on a Plan
Cramlington has an unusual story for a Northumberland town. Unlike the county’s ancient market towns and coastal settlements, Cramlington was deliberately designed – first envisaged in 1958, and approved by Northumberland County Council’s planning committee in 1961 with the ambition of becoming what was billed at the time as “Britain’s first enterprise town.” Where the manor of Cramlington had existed quietly since at least 1135, mostly as farmland surrounding the parish church of St. Nicholas, the new town development of the 1960s transformed it into something else entirely – a planned community of housing estates, segregated cycle paths, and a purpose-built industrial zone, all laid out from scratch on what had previously been coal-mining land.
That planning legacy is still visible today. Cramlington’s neighbourhoods – Beaconhill, Collingwood, Eastfield, Mayfield, Shankhouse, Southfield, Whitelea, and more recently Arcot to the southwest – each grew as distinct estates within the wider new town design. The result is a place that functions less like a traditional town centre with sprawl around it, and more like a network of residential villages, linked by one of the most extensive segregated cycle networks anywhere in the North East.

From Coalfield to Commuter Town
It’s easy to forget, looking at Cramlington today, that this was once a coal-mining area. The town’s transformation into “diversified employment” – to use the phrase used at the time – succeeded well beyond its original brief. Today, Cramlington is home to significant pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing, with companies including Merck Sharp & Dohme operating large sites in the town’s northwest industrial areas, alongside a strong base of established and growing businesses across logistics, engineering, and trade.
At the same time, Cramlington has become very much a commuter town for Newcastle, helped enormously by Cramlington railway station on the East Coast Main Line and by its position just off the A1 and A19 – the very same road network that makes our storage site so easy to reach. With a population approaching 29,000, Cramlington is now the second-largest town in Northumberland, and one of the fastest-connected to the wider North East.
What That Means for Storage
A town built around growth, new housing, and a mobile, commuting population creates exactly the kind of demand that self storage is built to answer. We see it regularly at NE Self Storage:
New estate moves. With ongoing development in areas like Arcot in the southwest, where national housebuilders continue to bring new homes to the market, there’s a steady flow of people moving into – and within – Cramlington who need short-term storage to bridge the gap between properties.
Commuter household storage. For households balancing work in Newcastle with life in Cramlington, space at home is often at a premium. A nearby container gives back a garage, a spare room, or a loft that’s currently doing the job of a storage unit, badly.
Business storage for local industry. With manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and trade businesses well established across the town’s industrial estates, there’s consistent need for flexible, secure storage of stock, tools, and equipment that doesn’t tie a business into expensive additional premises.
Renovation and downsizing. As with anywhere, life events – house moves, renovations, bereavement, downsizing – create a need for somewhere safe to put things while decisions get made.
Right On North Nelson Park
Being based on the North Nelson Park Industrial Estate means we sit within Cramlington’s own established commercial heart, just off the A1 and A19, and easily reachable from every estate across town – whether you’re coming from Beaconhill, Mayfield, Southfield, Arcot, or East Cramlington. There’s no detour required, no awkward cross-county drive. For most Cramlington residents, we’re a five- to ten-minute journey at most.
Our container storage comes in three sizes, each suited to different needs:
- 10ft self storage containers – ideal for smaller loads, seasonal items, or the contents of a single room. From £20 per week.
- 20ft self storage containers – our most popular size, comfortably accommodating the contents of a typical home. From £30 per week.
- 40ft self storage containers – generous space for large households, business stock, or combined storage needs. From £60 per week.
Every container benefits from our AAA-rated security setup: 24-hour CCTV, high-security perimeter fencing, and a personal gate fob so you can access your unit whenever you need to. There are no long-term contracts – just weekly rental paid four weeks in advance, plus a one-off refundable £50 key and fob deposit.
